VeggieTales Creator: VeggieTales “not Christianity, it’s morality.”

Paul Vischer, co-creator of the VeggieTales, has gained some perspective since the company went bankrupt in 2003 and he lost all creative control. In a 2011 interview with WORLD Magazine, Vischer is quoted as saying:

I looked back at the previous 10 years and realized I had spent 10 years trying to convince kids to behave Christianly without actually teaching them Christianity. And that was a pretty serious conviction. You can say, ‘Hey kids, be more forgiving because the Bible says so,’ or, ‘Hey kids, be more kind because the Bible says so!’ But that isn’t Christianity, it’s morality.

The heart of Christianity is the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. It’s the fact that God loved the world and that love led Him to redeem mankind by sending His Son to save us. VeggieTales cut the heart and center out of the scriptures. In so doing, Vischer and his crew were doing what the Pharisees did in Jesus time. Jesus condemned the Pharisees saying, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. . . . if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.” (John 5:39,46).

The heart and center of the Scriptures is Jesus. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the Old Testament or the New Testament. The story of the Bible is the story of God saving mankind by working in time and space to bring Jesus and then through Jesus’ death and resurrection, working forgiveness and salvation for all mankind – reconciling us with the Father so that we may live eternally as His children. The morality stories in the Bible are not primary. In fact, without Jesus, it is impossible to truly be a “moral” person (John 15:5), because it is impossible to be selfless. But through faith in Christ, we have the Holy Spirit who moves us to love and care for others selflessly even as we journey here awaiting Christ’s return when we will live with Him forever.

  1. “The heart of Christianity is the atoning sacrifice of Jesus.”

    Amen.

The sad thing is this: Many Christians and innumerable Christian bookstore owners BELIEVE that the moralism of Veggie Tales is Christianity.
