In Ephesians 5, we see answers the question that has been raging in our society as of late - why is marriage defined as a man united with his wife in a one-flesh union? Why is marriage restricted to one man and one woman united for life? The answer is, “Because . . . Jesus.” Or, more specifically, “Because Jesus and the Church.”
But even when Christ is in the stern of the boat sleeping, He is and remains the almighty and omnipotent God in human flesh. The disciples had nothing to fear because The Scriptures must be fulfilled – He must go to Jerusalem and be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise again on the third day. And none of that could happen if He died in a boat on the sea of Galilee.
As we make ourselves ready to celebrate Christmas, we are reminded that Jesus will return in the clouds attended by His angels and will judge the living and the dead and we are driven to ask the question, “O, Lord, How shall I Meet You, How welcome you aright?” (LSB 334) Given our go-go-go do-do-do lifestyle - how are we to prepare for Jesus return?
